Dell Technologies A Himalayan Endeavor for Sustainability
December 19, 2023In a world increasingly focused on sustainability, Dell Technologies continues to lead the way with impactful initiatives. Following installing on-site solar panels in Malaysia and the expansion of Asset Recovery Services, Dell is now turning its attention to the plastic waste issue on Mount Everest.
Mount Everest, a dream destination for many, sees nearly 80,000 visitors annually, leaving behind approximately 250 tons of waste. In alignment with its commitment to the circular economy, Dell Technologies supports The Sagarmatha Next Centre, a non-profit run by local environmental enthusiasts en route to Everest base camp.
Situated at 3,775 meters above sea level, the Sagarmatha Next Centre is a crucial stop for Everest trekkers. Dell collaborated with National Geographic Explorer Martin Edstrom to create a video showcasing the impact of waste in the region. Cutting-edge technology from Dell enhances the visitor experience, including digital exhibitions, maps of hiking routes, and education on landfill sites.
Powered by Dell’s OptiPlex Micro Form Factor PC and 55 4K Interactive Touch Monitors, the centre provides a comprehensive and interactive learning experience. Visitors can explore every inch of the facility, view hiking routes, and learn about the more than 80 landfill sites in the Mount Everest region.
For those unable to reach the summit, a VR experience brings the mountain peak to them, powered by Dell Precision mobile workstations. Dell’s support extends beyond technology, contributing to the Sagarmatha Next Centre’s Carry Me Back initiative, and encouraging visitors to actively participate in waste removal.
Since April 2022, the initiative has successfully removed over 5,000 bags of trash, or 5000 kg of waste, from Mount Everest, with much of it recycled. Dell Technologies’ commitment to Sagarmatha Next showcases the powerful synergy of sustainability, education, and technology, proving that there are no limits to where these values can lead us.
