Collaboration Between Samsung with British Gas Energy
February 8, 2024Samsung Electronics has announced a strategic partnership with British Gas to enhance energy management for households across the UK. This collaboration extends the capabilities of SmartThings Energy by integrating with British Gas’ PeakSave incentive program, offering users the opportunity to optimize home energy efficiency with minimal intervention.
Chanwoo Park, Executive Vice President at Samsung Electronics, highlighted the synergy between the innovative technology business and British Gas as one of the UK’s most trusted brands. The joint effort aims to empower customers through SmartThings Energy, providing them with streamlined control to optimize daily routines and energy consumption.
British Gas, with a rich history dating back to 1812 as the world’s first utility company, is a leading energy and home services provider in the UK. With a commitment to achieving net zero by 2050, British Gas assists customers in reducing carbon footprints through various energy-efficient home improvements.
A key outcome of this collaboration is the integration of SmartThings Energy’s Auto Demand Response (Auto DR) feature with British Gas’ PeakSave program in Great Britain. This initiative incentivizes customers to shift electricity usage during peak hours, earning rewards for reducing electricity consumption during designated events.
SmartThings Energy’s Auto DR feature offers multiple activation methods tailored to different appliances. Users can leverage the AI Energy Mode, which automatically optimizes supported appliances for energy efficiency. Additionally, the power-off function allows users to reduce energy consumption by turning off applicable appliances, including third-party lights and plugs. Smart temperature adjustment for EHS (Heatpump) products and third-party thermostats also contributes to energy savings.
SmartThings Energy goes beyond compatibility, assisting users without Auto DR-compatible appliances by sending alerts within the application during peak events. This proactive approach enables users to take personalized actions to conserve energy when notified.
While the collaborative efforts are initially launched in Great Britain, Samsung has already introduced its DR service in various regions, including Seoul, California, and New York in 2023. The company envisions expanding these initiatives globally, seeking further collaborations to provide comprehensive programs contributing to the Net Zero Home.
Recent milestones include the energy-efficient residential community in Brobyholm, Sweden, announced in November 2023, and the Southern Company project unveiled at CES® 2024. To learn more about SmartThings Energy, visit https://www.smartthings.com/smartthings-energy.
