Samsung’s “Coral in Focus” Wins Global Recognition for Ocean Conservation

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has announced that its “Coral in Focus” initiative—powered by Ocean Mode, an advanced camera feature on newer Galaxy smartphones—has received major global recognition for its role in protecting marine ecosystems.

The initiative earned Gold in the “Best Sustainability or Conservation Initiative” category at Engage for Good Halo Awards 2026. At the same time, its documentary, “Coral in Focus,” was honoured with the Coastal and Island Culture Award at the International Ocean Film Festival 2026.

Adding to the momentum, Samsung was also named in Fast Company’s 2026 Most Innovative Companies list—recognising its continued push to merge mobile innovation with environmental research.

Turning Smartphones Into Ocean Conservation Tools

At the heart of this initiative is a powerful collaboration between Samsung, Seatrees, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

By combining:

  • Galaxy’s advanced imaging capabilities
  • Seatrees’ community-driven restoration efforts
  • Scripps’ marine science expertise

Samsung is transforming everyday smartphones into tools that actively contribute to coral reef restoration.

Using Ocean Mode—available through the Expert RAW app—paired with underwater housings, users can capture high-quality underwater images. These images are then processed into detailed 3D photogrammetric models, helping scientists better monitor reef health and recovery.

Why Coral Reefs Matter

Coral reefs may cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, but they support around 25% of all marine life and sustain millions of people globally.

However, due to climate change, pollution, and overfishing, many reefs face the risk of disappearing by 2050 if no action is taken.

Samsung’s initiative directly addresses this challenge by supporting restoration efforts across multiple locations, including:

  • Costa Rica
  • Fiji
  • The Galápagos Islands
  • Indonesia
  • The United States

Real Impact on the Ground

The results so far show meaningful progress:

  • Over 20,000 coral fragments planted
  • More than 80 3D reef models created
  • Expanded monitoring and research capabilities

By making advanced underwater imaging more accessible, Ocean Mode reduces the need for expensive DSLR equipment—allowing more communities and researchers to participate in conservation efforts.

Innovation With Purpose

“Coral in Focus” is part of Samsung’s broader sustainability vision under its Galaxy for the Planet initiative.

From incorporating recycled materials into devices to developing impactful technologies like Ocean Mode, Samsung continues to show how innovation can go beyond performance—serving a larger purpose in protecting the environment.

Final Thoughts

This isn’t just about smartphones—it’s about using technology to make a real difference.

With “Coral in Focus,” Samsung proves that the devices we use every day can play a role in solving global challenges. By bridging technology, science, and community action, the initiative sets a strong example of how innovation can contribute to a more sustainable future.
