Xiaomi Corporation has released its seventh annual Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report for 2024, highlighting its strong commitment to sustainable development, technology accessibility, climate action, and recycling initiatives.

Leading with Core Technologies

At COP29 in November 2024, Xiaomi introduced a sustainability strategy powered by its foundational core technologies and its “Human × Car × Home” ecosystem. In 2024, Xiaomi invested RMB24.1 billion (~RM14.48 billion) in R&D, with over 42,000 global patents filed. Nearly half (48.5%) of its workforce are now in R&D roles.

Its Xiaomi Smart Factory and EV Factory, powered by AI and industrial internet technologies, have achieved an 81% production line automation rate — far exceeding industry norms — with eco-friendly, efficient manufacturing processes.

Advancing Technology Accessibility

Xiaomi continues to enhance digital accessibility for users with disabilities. In 2024, it improved features like TalkBack, using AI-powered OCR in HyperOS for better text narration. HyperOS 2 also introduced real-time subtitles integrated with sound recognition, achieving 93% transcription accuracy.

For the elderly, Xiaomi partnered with organizations to create safer, more accessible technology standards and designs.

Climate Action and Adaptation

Xiaomi has expanded its climate goals beyond its operations to its supply chain. Smartphone suppliers must cut carbon emissions by at least 5% annually (starting from 2024) and use at least 25% renewable electricity by 2030, reaching 100% by 2050.

In 2024, Xiaomi completed carbon footprint assessments for 18 products and achieved ISO 50001 certification for energy management. Shifting more logistics from air to sea and rail reduced emissions by 3,378 tonnes.

Global Recycling and Reuse Efforts

Xiaomi’s electronic waste recycling programs continue to grow worldwide. By the end of 2024, it had achieved 95.94% of its five-year goal to recycle 38,000 tonnes of e-waste. In China alone, over 1.3 million devices were recycled, with trade-in programs expanding to nine overseas markets.

More than 130,000 devices — including laptops and monitors — were refurbished last year, a 4.7% increase from 2023.

In product design, Xiaomi increasingly uses recycled and bio-based materials, such as lemon residue-based components in the Xiaomi 14T and recycled metals in its devices. Its Smart Factory also earned a TÜV Rheinland three-star certification for achieving a 99.35% waste diversion rate.
