inDrive’s Alternativa Film Project Unveils 2024 Film Awards
September 18, 2024The Alternativa Film Project, a global non-profit initiative by inDrive, has launched the second edition of the Alternativa Film Awards, scheduled for 29 November in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This event aims to spotlight filmmakers from developing industries, recognizing both artistic talent and the social impact of cinema. After a successful debut in Kazakhstan, this year’s focus expands to Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
The 2024 call for submissions, which closed on 18 August, received 1,043 entries from 33 countries—double the previous year. Filmmakers across Asia submitted full-length films, while short films were open exclusively to Southeast Asia. Malaysia ranked in the top three, with 58 submissions out of 680 eligible entries, alongside Indonesia (206), Philippines (132), Vietnam (56), India (40), and Thailand (40).
Liza Surganova, Head of the Alternativa Film Project, expressed excitement over the increased submissions, particularly from Southeast Asia, and announced the addition of a Film Festival this year to foster public discussions on social and cultural issues.
Key events include:
- Film Festival (22-28 November): Free screenings and discussions with filmmakers, students, activists, and media on cinema’s role in social change.
- Industry Days (27-28 November): Workshops and networking sessions for filmmakers and producers to promote collaboration and highlight film’s impact on social change.
Kanat Nogoibayev, Senior Communications Manager at inDrive, emphasized the company’s commitment to social justice through initiatives like inVision, which supports education, creative industries, and more.
Yow Chong Lee, Malaysian committee member and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak lecturer, praised Malaysian films for balancing art, entertainment, and social messages, addressing issues such as social media, environment, and diversity.
The Selection Committee, made up of 24 international film experts, will announce the nominees in October. Winners will share a $100,000 prize fund, with four full-length film winners receiving $20,000 each, and two short film winners receiving $10,000 each.
