Sony has unveiled a new RGB LED display system featuring an independent drive for red, green, and blue (RGB) LEDs. Designed for large-screen displays, this technology delivers high colour purity and a wider colour gamut, ensuring more vibrant images. The system incorporates Sony’s proprietary backlight control technology, allowing for precise colour gradation and improved black reproduction, making it ideal for both film production and home entertainment.

Next-Level Display Performance

Sony’s independent drive RGB LED technology enables each colour to emit light separately, covering over 99% of the DCI-P3 colour space and approximately 90% of ITU-R BT.2020. This ensures:

  • More natural colour representation across the screen, even on large displays
  • Brighter, more vivid images with dynamic power allocation for each RGB channel
  • Peak brightness over 4000 nits, offering unmatched colour volume

Unlike conventional high-brightness TVs that focus on peak highlights, Sony’s system adjusts brightness in harmony with colour gradation, ensuring deep blues, vibrant reds, and detailed shades are rendered naturally.

Advanced Processing for Superior Image Quality

Equipped with a 96-bit high-speed signal processor, Sony’s display system enhances dynamic range and gradation accuracy. This results in:

  • Deep blacks and brilliant whites appear simultaneously
  • Smooth brightness transitions for realistic imagery
  • Wider viewing angles with minimal colour shift and brightness loss

Additionally, the system features enhanced pixel correction technology, delivering twice the processing power of conventional local dimming systems. This ensures precise colour reproduction without unwanted shifts or distortions.

Collaboration for the Future of Display Technology

Sony is partnering with MediaTek for control processor development, ROHM for LED drive ICs, and Sanan Optoelectronics for LED advancements. These collaborations will help bring this next-generation display technology to consumer TVs and professional content creation displays, with mass production set to begin in 2025.

With this innovation, Sony continues to push the boundaries of visual expression, delivering industry-leading image quality and redefining the future of entertainment.
