Sony Introduces Material-to-Material Recycling for TVs with SORPLAS Starting with the 2024 BRAVIA 8 Series
April 22, 2025Sony is taking another step toward sustainability with the introduction of Material-to-Material recycling — a breakthrough method that repurposes plastic from end-of-life TV rear covers for use in new televisions. This initiative ensures the recycled material meets the same high standards as the original, maintaining quality while reducing environmental impact.
The process starts by recovering plastic from TV rear covers at designated collection facilities. This reclaimed material is then incorporated into SORPLAS, Sony’s proprietary flame-retardant recycled plastic. For the first time, this method will be applied to the 65-inch 4K OLED BRAVIA 8 (2024 model), with global shipments set to begin in 2025.
A New Standard in TV Recycling
Rear covers from old TVs contain different plastic types, which previously made direct reuse difficult due to inconsistencies in texture and durability. To solve this, Sony’s BRAVIA design team partnered with Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation to develop advanced sorting and blending technology.
This allows precise separation of plastics — regardless of manufacturer — and their integration into new products without compromising quality. The result: TV parts made with high-grade recycled materials that look and perform like new.
Towards Closed-Loop Recycling
Sony’s long-term vision is to achieve closed-loop recycling — where materials from end-of-life products are continuously reused to manufacture new ones. By using SORPLAS in its TVs and improving its recycling capabilities, Sony is moving closer to a fully circular product lifecycle.
To mark Earth Day on April 22, Sony will spotlight this and other environmental efforts on its dedicated sustainability website. The company continues to pursue eco-conscious innovation, shaping a future where technology and sustainability go hand in hand.
