Sony has announced the launch of the FX2 (model ILME-FX2), the latest addition to its Cinema Line camera family. Designed for independent filmmakers, content creators, and small production crews, the FX2 combines advanced cinematic features with user-friendly design, offering a powerful tool for capturing professional-quality video and stills.

Designed with Creators in Mind

According to Sony, the FX2 was developed based on feedback from users. It comes with a new eyepiece, better usability, and a compact design to support a wide range of filmmaking needs. Sony’s goal with the FX2 is to help creators tell authentic stories and capture real emotion in every shot.

Powerful Imaging Capabilities

The FX2 features a 33-megapixel full-frame Exmor R™ sensor, delivering sharp detail and beautiful background blur (bokeh). It supports S-Log3 for up to 15+ stops of dynamic range, allowing filmmakers to retain rich detail in both bright and dark areas of a scene.

It also features Dual Base ISO (800 and 4000) for high-quality video in various lighting conditions and can record at up to ISO 102400, making it great for low-light shooting. With support for 4:2:2 10-bit video and multiple professional formats like XAVC S-I DCI 4K, the FX2 gives editors flexibility in post-production.

Thanks to an internal cooling fan, the camera can record in 4K 60p continuously for up to 13 hours. Creators can also shoot in slow motion — up to 60fps in 4K and 120fps in Full HD. It supports log shooting modes such as Cine EI, Cine EI Quick, and Flexible ISO, and allows up to 16 user LUTs for precise color previews during filming.

Built for Cinematic Looks

The FX2 comes with S-Cinetone™ as the default look, giving footage a natural cinematic tone straight out of the camera. Users can also choose from multiple creative profiles and picture presets. The camera supports anamorphic lenses with built-in de-squeeze display for accurate framing.

Compact, Lightweight, and Easy to Use

The FX2 follows the compact design of Sony’s FX3 and FX30, offering easy handling for solo shooters or small crews. Built-in mounting points make it easy to attach accessories without needing a cage. The camera measures just 129.7 x 77.8 x 103.7 mm and weighs around 679g, making it ideal for handheld and on-the-go use. A top handle (XLR-H1) can be added for better grip and audio control.

Advanced Autofocus and Stability Features

Sony has upgraded the autofocus system with Real-time Recognition AF, which accurately detects and tracks humans, animals, vehicles, birds, and even insects. Features like AF Assist, focus breathing compensation, and adjustable AF speed and sensitivity allow for precise control over focus transitions.

The FX2 also includes new Active Mode and Dynamic Active Mode for smooth handheld footage. With Auto Framing, the camera can automatically track and crop the subject even when mounted on a tripod. The Framing Stabiliser keeps the subject centered in the frame, useful when the operator is moving.

High-Quality Still Image and Hybrid Use

In addition to video, the FX2 can capture 33MP high-resolution still images, with a dedicated MOVIE/STILL mode switch for easy toggling. The camera menus also change automatically depending on the mode selected. Holding the Fn button gives quick access to shooting options.

Familiar but Upgraded Hardware

The FX2 includes a new 3.68-million-dot electronic viewfinder (EVF) with a deep eyepiece, designed for better viewing during video shoots. A 3.0-inch vari-angle touchscreen allows for flexible framing from different angles. Controls are intuitively placed, with tally lights for clear recording status and a new BIG6 display that shows key settings like FPS, ISO, white balance, and more.

Recognising the popularity of vertical video for social media, the FX2 also displays shooting info in portrait orientation when used vertically.

The camera’s handle unit includes dual XLR/TRS inputs and a 3.5mm mic jack, supporting 4-channel, 24-bit digital audio recording for professional sound quality.

Connectivity and Live Streaming Ready

The FX2 supports HDMI Type-A output for high-quality 4K 60p 10-bit video and 16-bit RAW. It offers dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz and 5GHz), wired LAN via adapter, and USB-C with 10Gbps SuperSpeed and Power Delivery. Built-in USB and network streaming features also make it easy to livestream or manage remote productions.

A Step Toward Sustainability and Accessibility

Sony has built the FX2 with its ‘Road to Zero’ environmental commitment in mind. The camera is produced in factories that use 100% renewable energy. Accessibility features include a screen reader, display magnification, tactile buttons, and a touch-based menu, making it easier for all users to operate.

Availability in Malaysia

The Sony FX2 will be available in Malaysia starting August 2025.
