From Homemaker to Entrepreneur: Madam Jasbinder’s Journey of Resilience and Success

After dedicating much of her life to being a housewife, starting a business wasn’t part of Madam Jasbinder Kaur’s plan—until the pandemic changed everything. When Malaysia entered lockdown in 2020, she saw the community’s struggle to access essentials. Inspired by her son Mandip’s business achievements, Madam Jasbinder took a bold leap into entrepreneurship, launching PK Grocery. Today, it’s a successful online store on Lazada, reflecting her remarkable journey from homemaker to thriving business owner.

Now in her sixties, Madam Jasbinder shared, “I never imagined myself as an entrepreneur at 58. But once we started, the rewards became clear—knowing we’re helping the community and providing convenience has made this journey incredibly fulfilling.”

With her son’s support, PK Grocery began as a small home-based venture serving friends and neighbors with essential household items like toiletries and groceries. The shop quickly gained a loyal customer base, known for offering quality products at affordable prices. As word spread, demand grew, prompting a strategic move to eCommerce on Lazada.

Expanding Online and Embracing eCommerce

Within a year, PK Grocery saw steady growth. Madam Jasbinder and Mandip decided to take their venture online, despite her limited experience with technology. She recalled, “Learning how to use a laptop and smartphone was challenging, but with Mandip’s help, I gained confidence in running an online store. Moving to eCommerce was a big step, but it’s allowed us to reach more customers.”

As they adapted to the online landscape, PK Grocery took advantage of Lazada’s double-digit sales campaigns, which boosted visibility and brought in new customers. The platform’s integrated features for order processing, payments, and delivery simplified the eCommerce journey for Madam Jasbinder. She noted, “These sales campaigns, especially Lazada’s 11.11 Biggest Sale, have helped PK Grocery grow consistently.”

Personal Touches for Lasting Connections

Madam Jasbinder’s thoughtful approach has also set PK Grocery apart. She finds ways to keep costs down, such as using recycled boxes for packaging, and includes personal thank-you notes with each order, creating a warm, human touch that resonates with customers. “We aim to offer the best value without sacrificing quality,” she said. “Showing gratitude makes our store feel more personal.”

Her efforts didn’t go unnoticed. In July 2024, Madam Jasbinder was invited to speak at Lazada’s Seller Summit—a milestone she treasures deeply. “Speaking at the Seller Summit was unforgettable. I never imagined sharing my eCommerce journey with sellers from across the country.”

Inspiring Others to Take the Leap

Looking ahead, Madam Jasbinder dreams of opening a physical PK Grocery store in Petaling Jaya to expand beyond her hometown of Ipoh. Reflecting on her journey, she said, “Being able to earn independently has given me a sense of pride. That’s the greatest reward.”

She believes that perseverance is key: “In life, we should always continue to grow and try new things. Don’t be afraid to take the first step. With time, patience, and determination, success will come.” And when things get overwhelming? “I watch dramas to relax,” she added with a smile.

Madam Jasbinder’s story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to take on new challenges and succeed. Her journey, built on resilience, family support, and a willingness to learn, inspires others to reach beyond their comfort zones and leave a lasting legacy.
