Samsung Expands Onyx Cinema LED With New 14-Meter Display
April 21, 2026Samsung is expanding the future of premium cinema with the introduction of a new 14-meter standard for its Onyx cinema LED lineup, unveiled at CinemaCon 2026. Designed specifically for Premium Large Format (PLF) auditoriums, this latest addition reflects the growing demand for larger, more immersive theater experiences that go beyond what audiences can replicate at home. With this move, Samsung is not only scaling up screen size but also reinforcing its position in redefining how films are experienced in modern cinemas.
The new 14-meter Onyx screen builds on the platform’s reputation for exceptional picture quality, reliability and scalability, now tailored for bigger venues. As exhibitors increasingly focus on premium formats to attract audiences, larger screens are becoming central to delivering that cinematic “wow” factor. Samsung’s latest offering enables more immersive viewing, improved seating layouts and better utilisation of theater space, making it a practical upgrade for operators looking to elevate their offerings.
Since its debut in 2017, Samsung Onyx has pushed the boundaries of cinema LED technology with deep blacks, vibrant colours and high contrast. Following the introduction of 5-meter and 10-meter models, the new 14-meter format extends the lineup into larger auditoriums while maintaining the same core performance. It supports up to 4K resolution at 120Hz, ensuring ultra-smooth motion and sharp visuals even on a much bigger scale.
To optimise performance at this size, the display features a 3.3mm pixel pitch, delivering consistent image clarity across the entire screen. It also introduces flexible scaling support, allowing the screen to expand up to 20 meters by adding modular LED cabinets. This creates a seamless, floor-to-ceiling visual experience without compromising quality, giving cinemas greater flexibility in designing their spaces.
Samsung Onyx continues to stand out as the world’s first DCI-certified cinema LED display, supporting both scope and flat aspect ratios. Its HDR technology delivers peak brightness of up to 300 nits, significantly brighter than traditional projection systems, while achieving 100% colour volume and infinite contrast ratio for true blacks and enhanced detail in darker scenes. The result is a more vivid and lifelike viewing experience that aligns closely with filmmakers’ creative intent.
Beyond traditional screenings, the Onyx platform also supports a wide range of content including live sports, concerts, gaming events and corporate presentations. Unlike projection-based systems, the LED display maintains consistent brightness and image quality regardless of screen size or seating position. Compatibility with Dolby and GDC media servers further ensures smooth integration into existing cinema operations.
Samsung’s continued expansion in the cinema space is also reflected in its growing global presence. Recent installations include premium venues such as Pathé Dar Essalam in Rabat, Morocco, where multiple Onyx screens have been deployed as part of a flagship cinema experience. In the United States, Trilith Cinemas in Georgia became the first to feature the latest generation of Onyx displays across multiple auditoriums, highlighting the platform’s appeal in key film production hubs.
As cinemas evolve to meet changing audience expectations, Samsung’s 14-meter Onyx screen represents a clear step forward in delivering larger, brighter and more immersive experiences. By combining cutting-edge display technology with flexible scalability, the company continues to shape the next chapter of premium moviegoing, where the screen itself becomes a defining part of the experience.
