42KL Ignite Digital Learning Centre For Refugee
June 26, 202442 Kuala Lumpur (42KL) proudly hosted the second edition of Code4TheFuture, a program designed to introduce coding and ignite digital curiosity among refugee students in Malaysia.
This year, the one-day program welcomed 35 refugee students aged 13 to 19 from Fugee School, a dedicated learning center for refugee communities in Kuala Lumpur.
Code4TheFuture introduced students to the basics of Python and game development using the game engine pygame. This provided students with a unique opportunity to learn concepts behind game design, game engines, and graphics to create a 2D platformer game.
Refugee students in Malaysia face numerous challenges, including limited access to formal education and technology, language barriers, and financial constraints. For the refugee community, opportunities to learn advanced digital skills like coding are particularly scarce.
Code4TheFuture aims to bridge this educational gap by offering accessible and inclusive learning environments where students can develop essential digital skills. The initiative underscores the importance of technology education in empowering youth, aligning with the mission of both organizations to offer learning opportunities to all.
“This collaboration with Fugee School is a testament to 42 Malaysia’s dedication and commitment to making tech education accessible for all, regardless of their background. We are proud that Code4TheFuture has positively impacted around 70 refugee students since its inception in 2023, and we look forward to the program’s continued success,” said Jeff Sandhu, Chief Operating Officer of 42 Malaysia. “By raising awareness and equipping these young minds with digital skills, specifically coding, we are opening doors to new opportunities and helping them build a brighter future.”
Fugee School’s Founder, Deborah Henry, expressed enthusiasm about the program’s impact. “At Fugee School, we are dedicated to providing holistic education to refugee children. Access to practical tech skills is essential, especially in a time of AI, to ensure they acquire critical skills for success in a rapidly evolving job market. This partnership with 42 Kuala Lumpur allows our students to explore the world of technology and gain crucial skills for the digital age. We are incredibly grateful for this opportunity.”
Code4TheFuture took place at the 42KL campus in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, guided by student volunteers from 42KL. Beyond learning the concepts behind game development, the program fosters important soft skills such as problem-solving and creative thinking.
By exposing students to the world of coding, 42KL and Fugee School aim to inspire and empower the next generation of tech-savvy individuals.
