Sony Malaysia has named Chong Wan Yong as Malaysia’s National Award winner for the Sony World Photography Awards 2025.

The National & Regional Awards program, organized by Sony and Creo under the World Photography Organisation, celebrates outstanding local photographers worldwide. This year, 56 countries participated, with over 419,000 images submitted from more than 200 countries and territories.

Winners of the National & Regional Awards were selected from the Open competition, which honors the best single images taken in the past year.

Chong Wan Yong impressed the judges with her stunning photograph, Spider-Verse, which entered the Motion category. The image captures a group of freedivers floating upside down beneath a boat, creating an ethereal, gravity-defying scene. Their silhouettes blend seamlessly with the underwater world, evoking the mesmerizing motion of the Spider-Verse.

A diving instructor with over a decade of experience, Wan Yong combines her passion for the ocean with her love for photography. She travels extensively, capturing the beauty of both land and sea, aiming to inspire others to explore, protect, and connect with the underwater world.

Reflecting on her win, she shared:
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to inspire a deeper connection with our world through the stories my lens captures.”

As Malaysia’s National Award winner, Wan Yong will receive Sony digital imaging equipment and have her work showcased in the Sony World Photography Awards exhibition and book.

The overall winners for the Student, Youth, Open, and Professional categories will be announced on April 16, 2025, with their works displayed at Somerset House, London, from April 17 to May 5, 2025. For more information about upcoming announcements and winners please visit worldphoto.org.
