MILO® Turns Used Beverage Cartons into 1,000 Sets of Eco-Friendly Tables and Chairs for Schools

What happens to a MILO® carton after you finish your drink? Through the MILO® Energy for Good initiative, that empty carton can have a second life — and it could eventually become something useful for schools.

Now in its second year, the initiative has reached more than 300 schools across Malaysia, transforming everyday recycling efforts into valuable resources for participating schools.

From Cartons to Classroom Furniture

Building on MILO®’s long-running The CAREton Project, the MILO® Energy for Good initiative encourages students to collect and recycle used beverage cartons through a points-based redemption system.

Instead of simply throwing an empty carton away, students can contribute it to their school’s recycling efforts. The collected cartons are then transformed into useful products, including sports equipment and classroom furniture.

As part of its latest milestone, MILO® is delivering 1,000 sets of tables and chairs made from recycled beverage cartons to schools that have demonstrated strong participation in the programme.

The initiative is carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Education Malaysia and Tetra Pak Malaysia, turning recycling education into a practical example of the circular economy.

Making Recycling More Meaningful

For students, the programme goes beyond simply learning about recycling in the classroom. They can see the results of their efforts first-hand when used cartons are transformed into products that benefit their own schools.

This helps demonstrate an important message: small everyday actions can create a bigger impact when an entire community takes part.

Juan Aranols, Chief Executive Officer of Nestlé Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, said the initiative aims to make sustainability practical and rewarding by encouraging students, teachers and families to incorporate recycling into their daily routines.

The programme also continues MILO®’s efforts to promote responsible environmental habits among young Malaysians, while supporting schools with useful resources.

With more than 300 schools now participating, MILO® Energy for Good shows how something as simple as recycling an empty beverage carton can contribute to a larger sustainability effort.

From an empty MILO® carton to a new table, chair or piece of sports equipment, the initiative is giving used packaging a second life while encouraging the next generation to think differently about waste.
