Sony and Creo have officially opened submissions for the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2027, inviting filmmakers from around the world to showcase their creativity. Now in its fifth year, the global awards programme continues to celebrate emerging filmmaking talent while providing a unique platform for creators to connect with industry professionals and accelerate their careers.

Participation is free, and entries are now being accepted through the official Sony Future Filmmaker Awards website until 15 December 2026.

New Immersive Category Debuts

A major highlight for the 2027 edition is the introduction of the Immersive category, presented by Meta. The new category recognises filmmakers exploring immersive storytelling through formats such as 3D, 180-degree and 360-degree video.

Open to both fiction and non-fiction projects, including live action and animation, the category celebrates creators who push the boundaries of cinematic storytelling by placing audiences directly inside the experience.

The winning filmmaker will receive a Meta VR device and a US$5,000 cash prize.

Six Categories Open for Submission

The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2027 features six competitive categories:

  • Fiction – Narrative short films between five and twenty minutes.
  • Non-Fiction – Documentary or factual short films between five and twenty minutes.
  • Immersive – Immersive films created in 3D, 180-degree or 360-degree formats.
  • Animation – Animated short films using any animation technique, including stop-motion, computer animation and experimental animation.
  • Student – Open to students currently enrolled in recognised diploma or degree-level film programmes worldwide.
  • Future Format – Short films designed specifically for vertical viewing (9:16), encouraging innovative storytelling for mobile audiences.

Depending on the category, winners will receive Sony Digital Imaging equipment, cash prizes, and Meta VR devices.

An Exclusive Hollywood Experience

One of the biggest attractions of the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards is the opportunity for shortlisted filmmakers to participate in an exclusive four-day industry programme at the iconic Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, Los Angeles.

Scheduled to take place from 7 to 10 June 2027, the programme offers masterclasses, workshops and networking sessions led by Sony Pictures executives and industry professionals.

Participants will gain valuable insights into film production, acquisition, publicity, animation, sound design and the latest filmmaking technologies while building connections with fellow creators from around the world.

The programme concludes with the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards Gala Ceremony on 10 June 2027, where winners across the major categories will be announced.

Sustainability Prize Returns

Also returning this year is the Sustainability Prize, jointly presented by Sony and Creo.

The award recognises short films that inspire positive action through themes such as environmental sustainability, accessibility, diversity, equality and inclusion. The winning filmmaker will receive US$5,000, Sony Digital Imaging equipment, and promotional support across the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards platforms.
