Android 17 Officially Arrives With New Productivity, Gaming, Security and AI Features

Google has officially announced Android 17, introducing a range of new features designed to improve productivity, entertainment, security and everyday usability. The update is rolling out first to Pixel devices, with support for other eligible Android smartphones and tablets expected throughout 2026.

Selected premium devices will also receive Gemini Intelligence later this summer, bringing proactive AI-powered assistance to help users manage tasks and stay organised throughout the day.

Multitask More Efficiently With Bubbles

One of the standout additions in Android 17 is Bubbles, a feature that allows users to transform any app into a compact floating window.

By long-pressing an app icon, users can convert it into a bubble that remains accessible on top of other applications. On larger-screen devices, bubbles are organised in a dedicated bubble bar at the bottom of the display, allowing quick switching between apps, resizing windows or expanding them into full-screen mode.

The feature is designed to make multitasking more convenient, whether users are referencing notes while travelling, following tutorials, checking maps or monitoring live sports updates.

Express Yourself With Screen Reactions

Android 17 also introduces Screen Reactions, enhancing the screen recording experience with a redesigned toolbar and streamlined workflow.

Users can now record themselves using the front-facing camera while simultaneously capturing their screen. This enables creators, educators and everyday users to add personal reactions, commentary and insights directly onto apps, websites, or videos without requiring additional editing tools or green-screen setups.

Foldable Gaming Mode Enhances Mobile Gaming

For foldable smartphone users, Android 17 introduces a dedicated Foldable Gaming Mode that leverages larger displays.

The feature creates an optimised 50/50 layout, displaying gameplay on the upper half of the screen while placing a dynamic virtual game controller on the lower half. This allows gamers to enjoy a larger viewing area while maintaining comfortable controls.

Android 17 also introduces native controller remapping support and improves gaming performance by reducing frame drops and stuttering through more efficient memory management.

Foldable Gaming Mode will be available in the coming months.

Stronger Security and Privacy Controls

Google continues to strengthen Android’s security capabilities with several new privacy-focused features.

Users can now grant temporary, precise location access to apps instead of providing permanent permissions. Android 17 also allows users to share selected contacts rather than granting access to their entire contact list.

The enhanced Find Hub platform introduces a more secure “Mark as Lost” feature. When activated, a lost device can be locked using biometric protection, preventing thieves from accessing sensitive information or disabling tracking even if they know the device passcode.

Improved Scam and Threat Protection

Android 17 expands Google’s security protections by improving Live Threat Detection, enabling the system to identify and block more suspicious apps and scam attempts.

Advanced Protection Mode has also been enhanced to provide stronger safeguards against sophisticated cyber threats.

To combat unauthorised access attempts, Google has reduced the number of PIN guesses allowed and increased waiting periods between failed login attempts, making brute-force attacks significantly more difficult.

Additional Features and Improvements

Android 17 includes several smaller but useful enhancements, including:

  • Option to hide app names on the home screen
  • Expanded Parental Controls support across all Android devices
  • Dedicated volume controls for digital assistants
  • Additional customisation options for Dark Theme
  • Improved RAM management through app memory limits to boost overall performance and battery efficiency

With a strong focus on productivity, entertainment, privacy and security, Android 17 represents one of Google’s most comprehensive platform updates, while laying the foundation for deeper AI integration through Gemini Intelligence in the months ahead.
