Signify Champions Smart Lighting for Malaysia’s Sustainable Future
July 22, 2025As Malaysia moves forward under the MADANI vision, sustainability stands as a key pillar in the nation’s growth. With a strong focus on responsible development, the government has launched major initiatives such as the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA) 2024 to accelerate green growth.
Malaysia was recently recognised as the top Southeast Asian nation in the Energy Transition Index 2023 by the World Economic Forum, highlighting the country’s commitment to a low-carbon future. Two of NETR’s six strategic levers focus on energy efficiency and renewable energy—areas where Signify, a global leader in energy-efficient smart lighting, is playing a key role.
“We are seeing the Malaysian government set a clear line of plan for accelerating the country towards a greener and more sustainable growth path. Signify looks forward to partnering with local industries and governments on this transition,” said Mr. Sukanto Aich, President of Signify Malaysia.
Signify’s Sustainability Goals
Signify is not only supporting Malaysia’s sustainability journey but also leading by example. Globally, the company is targeting Net Zero emissions by 2024 and aims to reduce its entire value chain emissions by 50% by 2030 (compared to 2019). Its sustainability strategy includes five key areas:
- Climate Action
- Circular Economy
- Food Security
- Health & Wellbeing
- Safety & Security
Smart Lighting, Smarter Cities
Malaysia is seeing rapid adoption of smart, IoT-enabled lighting across cities, commercial buildings, and homes. According to the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan (NEEAP), lighting makes up 15–20% of energy use in commercial buildings. Switching to smart lighting can reduce this by up to 70%.
The EECA 2024 further supports this shift by mandating:
- Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS)
- Energy audits
- Product labelling for efficiency
This opens the door for large-scale adoption of intelligent lighting systems that save energy and costs while improving safety and comfort.
Lighting the Way Forward
From local councils to property developers and homeowners, there is growing interest in smart lighting as a practical solution for sustainability. Signify is already working with stakeholders across sectors to deliver lighting systems that align with Malaysia’s green building standards, helping to future-proof infrastructure and meet net-zero goals.
“We need to make energy-efficient smart lighting not just a green choice, but the obvious one,” says Mr. Sukanto Aich. “Our mission is to make it accessible, affordable, and impactful for all Malaysians—not just premium projects or urban areas.”
Signify Innovation Day 2025
Through its first-ever Signify Innovation Day 2025, the company brought together leaders from the industry and green-tech sectors to showcase smart lighting solutions that support Malaysia’s energy transition goals. From public infrastructure to private homes, Signify is focused on scaling green technologies that deliver energy savings, lower operational costs, and support a future-ready Malaysia.
