Sony RX1R III: A Compact Powerhouse with 61MP Full-Frame Sensor and AI Autofocus
July 17, 2025Sony has officially unveiled the RX1R III, the highly anticipated third-generation model in its RX1R lineup. This compact camera continues the series’ legacy of delivering high-end image quality, now featuring a 61MP 35mm full-frame Exmor R™ CMOS sensor, the advanced BIONZ XR™ image processor, and a ZEISS® Sonnar T 35mm F2 lens* — all packed into a lightweight, portable design.
Superior Image Quality in a Compact Body
At the heart of the RX1R III is its 61-megapixel back-illuminated sensor with AR (Anti-Reflection) coating and no optical low-pass filter, ensuring exceptional detail, low noise, and a wide dynamic range. Paired with the BIONZ XR™ processor, the camera offers fast performance and professional-grade image rendering.
The integrated ZEISS® 35mm F2 lens is precision-engineered for outstanding optical performance, with its positioning fine-tuned down to the micron level. Despite its fixed-lens design, the RX1R III delivers versatility through its compact form factor and innovative shooting functions.
Built for Creative Freedom
The RX1R III comes equipped with Sony’s AI processing unit, inherited from its flagship Alpha series. It intelligently recognises human shapes, eyes, heads, and bodies—even when partially obscured—enabling precise autofocus and tracking in both photos and video. The sensor offers approximately 78% coverage with 693 phase-detection AF points.
With Step Crop Shooting, users can switch between 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm focal lengths with a button or dial. RAW images retain full data, allowing post-production crop adjustments. The lens also includes a macro ring for close-up shots as near as 20cm (max magnification: 0.26x).
To suit a variety of visual styles, the RX1R III features 12 built-in Creative Looks, including FL2 for a nostalgic tone and FL3 for vibrant imagery. These looks can be applied to both stills and video, offering flexible creative control.
Functional, Durable Design
Built with a magnesium alloy body, the RX1R III is both lightweight and durable. The camera’s design integrates dials and the Multi-Interface Shoe (MI Shoe) flush into the body for improved ergonomics. The textured grip enhances handling comfort.
An XGA OLED electronic viewfinder with approximately 2.36 million dots and 0.70x magnification offers high clarity and contrast for accurate framing.
Power is supplied by the NP-FW50 battery, delivering up to 300 still shots per charge. A USB Type-C® port enables fast charging with USB PD-compatible devices and supports power from external sources like power banks for longer shooting sessions.
Commitment to Sustainability and Accessibility
The RX1R III supports Sony’s “Road to Zero” initiative, which aims to achieve zero environmental impact by 2050. The camera is manufactured at facilities using 100% renewable electricity and comes in packaging made from Sony’s Original Blended Material, replacing plastic.
In line with inclusive design principles, the camera includes accessibility features such as Screen Reader and Display Magnification, extending usability to visually impaired users.

Availability
The Sony RX1R III will be available in Malaysia from September 2025.
