Sony ECM-778 Shotgun Microphone and High-Speed
July 10, 2025Sony is proud to introduce the ECM-778, a newly developed shotgun microphone designed for high-quality content production across film, drama, documentary, and professional video applications. Compact yet powerful, the ECM-778 delivers immersive, high-resolution audio with clarity and precision, making it an ideal tool for capturing dialogue and ambient sound in diverse recording environments. With its lightweight 176mm body weighing just 102 grams, this microphone combines portability with performance, ensuring flexibility whether mounted on a boom pole or directly on compatible cameras equipped with XLR terminals, such as Sony’s Cinema Line and Alpha mirrorless models.
Engineered for professional-grade sound recording, the ECM-778 features a newly designed microphone capsule, a precision-machined brass acoustic tube, and a specially crafted internal circuit board. Together, these components deliver clear, spatially expansive high frequencies and stable mid-to-low tones with minimal interference or unwanted resonance.
The microphone’s sharp forward directivity ensures accurate sound pickup while suppressing noise from the sides and rear, making it perfect for capturing dialogue or subtle background sounds in controlled or challenging conditions. A built-in low-cut switch helps reduce wind or handling noise, and the microphone comes bundled with both foam and fur wind screens for reliable use in both indoor and outdoor settings. Its durable, machined aluminum body also helps suppress external vibrations and electrical noise for clean, consistent results.
In addition to the ECM-778, Sony is also launching two new CFexpress Type A memory cards – the CEA-G1920T (1920 GB) and CEA-G960T (960 GB) – along with the MRW-G3 card reader. These next-generation memory cards are optimized for Sony’s Cinema Line and Alpha series, offering ultra-fast read speeds of up to 1800 MB/s and write speeds of up to 1700 MB/s. Supporting the VPG400 standard for stable video capture at 400 MB/s, these cards are ideal for long-duration video recording and high-speed continuous shooting. Built to Sony’s TOUGH specifications, the new CFexpress cards offer enhanced durability with superior drop resistance, bend strength, and environmental protection, including resistance to dust, water, X-rays, UV, and static.
The MRW-G3 card reader is equally impressive, enabling high-speed data transfer to computers and is compatible with CFexpress 4 and USB 40Gbps for seamless and efficient workflows. It’s designed with built-in heat dissipation to manage large data transfers, making it suitable for high-volume post-production environments. Its compact and durable construction also allows creators to work reliably from virtually any location, whether in the studio or on the go.
These latest additions to Sony’s professional production ecosystem underscore the brand’s ongoing commitment to supporting creators with cutting-edge tools that enhance workflow efficiency, elevate audio and video quality, and foster creative freedom. Developed in close collaboration with professional film sound engineers, the ECM-778 delivers cinematic-quality audio that aligns with the demands of today’s content production standards. According to Kenichi Fujimoto, an award-winning sound engineer, the ECM-778 strikes the perfect balance between form and function, providing sound clarity, depth, and character that set a new benchmark in on-set recording.
The Sony ECM-778 shotgun microphone, along with the CEA-G1920T and CEA-G960T CFexpress Type A cards and the MRW-G3 card reader, will be available in Malaysia starting August 2025. With these innovations, Sony continues to empower filmmakers, videographers, and content creators worldwide to tell their stories with stunning clarity and uncompromising performance.
